South Central Coast
Heading south of Danang is Vietnam’s most beautiful stretch of coastline with some of the country’s best beaches, most luxurious resorts and a variety of beach and water activities from windsurfing to diving. Relaxing on the beach makes a nice break for travelers wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of Vietnam’s motorbike-crowded streets.
Nha Trang
Even though large-scale tourism has hit the beachside town of Nha Trang, life still moves by at a fairly leisurely pace. The beach dominates life in Nha Trang from the early morning locals who grace its shores for exercises, and the throngs of tourists who take a cool break from the midday sun in the aqua-marine waters, to the late night fishing boats dotting the horizon like distant stars. Nha Trang’s main beach, covering a distance of 4 miles and lined with coconut palms, is recognized as one of the 29 most beautiful bays in the world. The beach itself offers unobstructed views of many rocky islands that grace the bay. Here you can experience the country’s best scuba diving and snorkeling; the reef around the popular Hon Mun Island contains 300 types of coral and tropical fish. A boat cruise to the nearby islands is a guaranteed day of fun, singing and floating bars!
If you’re looking for some culture, the 7th century Hindu-inspired Cham Po Nagar towers are a popular spot for tourists and worshippers, as well as the giant white Buddha that sits above the entire town. West of Nha Trang into the countryside are some waterfalls and Ba Ho or “Three Lakes”, actually a series of natural springs and small waterfalls dotted with giant boulders. If it’s relaxation and therapy you’re after, most big resorts offer exclusive spa treatments but best of all is Nha Trang’s Thap Ba Hot Spring Center where you can soak in mineral pools and take a mud bath, alone or in a big group! The latest addition to Nha Trang is the world’s longest cable car that takes just nine minutes to cross from the mainland to one of Vietnam’s premier island resorts, Vinpearl Land.
Phan Thiet – Mui Ne
Whilst the town of Phan Thiet lacks the charm of Nha Trang, the stretch of pristine white sand coastline at Mui Ne makes up for this shortfall. Literally hundreds of small beach guesthouses and five-star resorts now line the palm and casuarina-lined beach. The main attraction in Mui Ne, apart from swimming and relaxation, are the incredible Saharan style multi-colored sand dunes. Don’t forget your camera if you visit the dunes. Mui Ne is fast becoming another water sports haven with kite-boarding and windsurfing at the top of the list given its regular cross-onshore winds.
Beaches and Resorts
There are still a number of beautiful and unspoiled beaches (although many are earmarked for resort construction) between Mui Ne and Qui Nhon. For wild beauty, take a break at the laid-back Jungle Beach, or nearby Whale Island. If you want to go top-notch and escape the throngs of tourists and potential paparazzi, Vietnam’s most expensive resort, the Six Senses Evason Hideaway can be found north of Nha Trang. Further north is Qui Nhon – a kind of Nha Trang twenty years ago – which is welcoming tourism and up-market resorts, specifically the Life Wellness Resort where you can be pampered to the point of abstraction!
When to Go
The climate of the southern coastal plains is sunny, dry and clear most of the year with a rainy season that varies in duration but typically lasts from October to January. Nha Trang has the lowest humidity in all of Vietnam and Mui Ne has the lowest rainfall. Beautiful one day, perfect the next!
